While Alex was visiting his family in Ukraine back in September, his good friend/neighbor Sergey got married. He and Olga have been through a lot together. Both Seriozha’s parents died 2 years ago–within a week of each other–and Olya helped him through it. Seriozha is a sailor, traveling for 6 months at a time, and their relationship has made it through the distance. We are so happy to see their love and devotion officially recognized–and celebrated!
They weren’t planning on a big wedding, so Alex didn’t bring his gear. Just a Canon XT rebel camera and a consumer HD video camera, but he still worked wonders. As often happens with weddings, Seriozha & Olya’s wedding had a mind of its own and grew into a full-fledged celebration!
This wedding is so meaningful to me and Alex because we were married in the same city hall just over 3 years ago! It feels like worlds away, but these photos bring back so many memories!
The ceremony begins with traditional bread, korovai:

And a step onto the rushnyk, or wedding towel.

Married!!

The traditional group photo in front of the Palace of Culture (and in front of the Lenin statue in the middle of the square).

And now, time for some fun!

Alex met up with the happy couple a few days later for a fun portrait session at an old mill. That’s where he captured this amusing shot:

Congratulations, Seriozha & Olya! May all your dreams come true!
